This is a DVD-VCR player combo., complaint , dead.
Located a service manual [ http://www.mediafire.com/file/025xt96uz8emxx4/slvd350p.pdf/file ]

Turns out the DVD door opens and closes normally but there is no display lighting
up. The VCR carriage motor attempts to spin then stops, remote seemed to have no effect.

Found a tip in another resource that said check
CIS508 1000\10 vented in supply.

It looked ok but changed all the 1000 / 10V caps in the supply anyhow plus another one near the display.

Funny that the dvd tray is fully working and I think I hear it checking for a dvd.

I didnt think the VCR section worked before, so I didnt put in a tape, but
it loads and plays a tape now, and the OSD comes up on the TV, and everything save the
display on the main board is working.

Resoldered the pins to the display, plus the ones on the connector to the button board mounted nearby.

Manual says its an LED type display , I have +5V to IC701, resoldered XT601, still no display.

Any suggestions on what else to check? Should I be able to get some segments on the display to light using diode check on the dmm?

Welcome!

Resolder the IC701 PT6959 and measured DC 5V pin 5 and 20.
Check the IC601 pin8 (VFD STB) connection to IC701 pin4; after the clock and data pins.

Resoldered IC701, no change. I have 5v on pin 5 and 20.

IC601 pin 8 has 5v on it, and rang out the foil trace to IC701 pin 4, its ok and also has 5v on it.

I have some voltages in the range of 1.8 to 3.6 on the display pins with respect to ground, just curious what
a random probe of those pins would result.

I used the heat gun to heat the 2 IC's and surrounding area, no change.

I am testing with the entire main board removed from the product, and the VCR and DVD mechanisms are disconnected from the main board,
so its just the mainboard itself Im testing with no other connectors hooked in except power and the button panel board. I know some smps require some kind of load to
turn on. so far the smps outputs I have checked seem to be functioning. Will I need to use a scope at this point?

Another Tech said there could be a dimmer feature with the display , some have low, medium high and off where the display is completely off. IC701 seems to show an
internal dimming function, but theres nothing in the SM or user manual describing this feature.

Nothing anywhere in the manual regarding the dimmer feature for the display. IC701 incorporates a dimming section but its not tied into anything? It may be defective and blanking the display. I dont see any restore factory default or system reset reference in the manual.

Any other pins worth checking on IC701?

Use the oscilloscope and check the clock and data impulses from the IC601 10-11 pins. Replace the IC701 (no dimmer function).
Maybe the IC603 eeprom data is incorrect.
