Sony TC-K561S no buttons work except for the on-off switch

No buttons work except for the on off switch on my sony tc-k561s. Play, FF, RW, RC and Stop give nothing!
On-off switch is the only one that seems to work!
The LED display does light up and with play directional but no corresponding motor action when these buttons are pressed.
Any helpful advice on what's wrong and how to correct it?
(This happened right after I replaced a split gear on the ff rw motor. This motor still now seems to work when the deck is switched on.)

I found it! Test mode says ok! But I think it may be the reel motor. It gets warmer than usual without running when the deck is turned on! And the reel control IC for it gets very warm too and again thats without the reel motor running! Something's probably wrong with the reel motor. Im checking it out now. What's your opinion??

I already have it and it's good but still has gaps on info. and test mode on k561s is one. (The 2 pin terminal is grounded on one so it may be designed to go into test mode when the pins are shorted.)

Hi!
As I recall, this machine have a switch that detects when the cassette is inserted.
I'd check that first.

The only switches that I see are activated upon insertion of a cassette tape are the tape type switches. The SW81 is only activated by gear cam action. I dont think mere insertion of a tape does anything on that but on the tape type ribbon relays it of course does. Of the 4 relays there, which one possibly turns on the tape operation buttons??

The only switches I can see are the tape type detection leaf switches at the top of the cassette well for detecting type 1, 2, 3, and type 4 cassette tapes. I guess these seem to serve for cassette presence detection as well and I don't remember any of these buttons (Play, FF, RW) working when the cassette was not inserted. What's you opinion on these leaf switches (they could also be considered as ribbon relays) serving as the tape type AND cassette presence functions for this Sony tc k561s unit?

Unfortunately, I can't attach a picture here, but the SW81 switch would be what I was thinking of.
Points 1 and 2 of the CNP81 connector should be short-circuited, imitating the closed state of the switch.

Where are SW81(S81 too) and CNP81 located?? On the capstan, main board or chassis?? (I saw both listed in the service manual but only listed. No images.)

It is quite hidden inside the cassette mechanism, the PCB is under the capstan belt.
It also has the cassette type sensor switches.
The PCB drawing can be found on page 14 of the service manual under the name SW-A Board

Hifista,

You seem pretty knowledgeable. I thinking that the problem may be the System Control IC (IC 801) on the main board.

How do I best use TP801 connectors (2 pins for test mode) on main board of sony tc k561s tapedeck (ie, or how to put it into test mode). Can you or anyone give any helpful advice?

I've tested the S81 switch, its connections and connectors. They all test ok in all positions of the cam gear. Any other sugestions???

I found it! So this is the switch that turns off the play, ff and rev and rec functions when no cassette tape is inserted? (I'll try to test it. However, at first glance, it looks intact. (I.e., it looks ok.))
