Samsung UE32B6050 (6000 series LED TV) movie mode
Samsungs 6000 series LED TVs (in my case a UE32B6050) only supports music and picture playback from USB. The 7000 series also supports video playback, which is pretty neat.
Fortunately it's pretty easy to enable the movie mode on the 6000 series:
* Enter the service menu (be careful with what you change here, it could brick the tv!):
o Turn off the TV. Press [Info] then [Menu] then [Mute] and finally [Power]
o The tv should now turn on and you'll see the service menu
* Change the model from 6000 to 7000 in the service menu:
o Select "Option"
o Move down to "Model" and change the setting from "UB6000" to "UB7000" (finish the selection with [Return]). Be careful not to select any other model!
o Press [Return] to get back to the main page in the service menu, press [Power] to finish the service menu
o Now enter the service menu again, and on the main page you should see the the model is now "UE32B7000" (for the 32" version). Power off to exit the service menu again.
Now your series 6000 TV will think it's a series 7000 and the movie mode will be enabled :)
Put some video files on a USB key and plug it in, press [Media.P] (or [Menu], then "Media Play (USB & DLNA)") and you should now see the new "Movie" icon. Select it and you'll now be able to choose the video you want to watch. I've tired a couple of files, XvID (in an AVI container) and x264 720p (in an MKV container) and both plays perfectly.
Now, with the HTPC connected via HDMI it's not the most convenient way to have to move files to USB keys and then plug them into the TV, but it's pretty cool to know it is possible :o)
