Pioneer PL-520 turntable arm issue

I bought pioneer pl 520 turntable.stylus arm on automatic or Manuel setting moves over to start groove then plays only a second or two .then automatically returns to the rest post and turns power off.if you Manuel set stylus down on record it also plays briefly and returns to rest
