Sony d-141 discman turning off after 2 seconds

Trying to diagnose a fault with a Sony discman d-141. When powered by batteries it comes up 00:00 for a second then goes off. Put a power lead in at 4.5v as stated on the case but get absolutely not even the 00:00

any ideas?
