Sony TC355 Tapecorder mechanic issue

I have recently received this model after it has been sitting in a garage for 15 years.  After cleanup and lubricating it functions well but has a problem with the holdback tension when in the play mode. All other shuttling functions are good. There is a lever adjacent to the supply reel which carries a belt driven pulley, which, in turn,  contacts the reel hub when in the rewind mode. This is accomplished via a flat spring which applies tension to the lever.  This is OK. However, this same pulley does not contact the reel hub in the play mode  owing to the flat spring not moving far enough to apply pressure to the reel hub. I can only assume that there is wear in the one side of the aforementioned lever which is limiting it's movement??  Any help would be much appreciated.   Philius

Phillius,

There is no "hold back tension" on the supply spindle.  The 355 is a single motor machine, and as such the supply spindle spins freely in play (& record) mode.  Tape pressure in maintained on the heads by felt pressure pads.  I was a bench technician for Sony/Superscope 1966-1971 and I know this machine intimately.

What problem is the machine exhibiting that you feel there should be hold back tension?  Thanks, Bill
