Vintage Bush ac34, sound distorted

Hi I have a Bush ac34 which is working but when volume is increased to full the sound is very distorted I notice from looking at the speaker there is a maybe finger hole would this cause the distortion.  Ps I have tried an external speaker but not of the same size and prity much the same do yo
urs know of anything else that could cause this TIA
